Sally Kindberg, a vicar and some penguins

Early last sunday the adventurous and kindly vicar of  St Mark’s church, Primrose Hill conducted a short matins service by the penguin pool at London zoo.  Luckily he has a strong speaking voice as several macaws tried to join in.  The choir sang, the sun shone, we attempted ‘the animals came in two by two’ and someone from the zoo read a short piece about conservation.  Years ago whilst researching my children’s book about London, I interviewed one of the zoo keepers who showed me how to make a special smoothie for a young penguin  – it involved cod liver oil and smelled disgusting, but not, apparently, to penguins. The keeper told me how at the end of one very hot summer’s day after all the visitors had gone home, she and a colleague had swum with the penguins.
