Visits to Chillingham Castle and Bamburgh Village Show

My last visit to stay with OH in her Bamburgh Castle apartment.  I’ve been there several times before,  to take part in a Sandcastle Competition, and to walk the Pilgrims Way to Lindisfarne amongst other things.  This time my visit coincided with the annual Village Show.  What excitement! Giant carrots etc, then some children’s sports events.

One morning we visited nearby Chillingham Castle owned by extraordinary octogenarian Sir Humphry Wakefield.

Sadly didn’t glimpse Sir H riding bareback round the grounds on his horse Bouncer as he often does apparently, but saw some of his vast collections of stuff, wandered round the torture chamber and ate tea in the castle’s cafe, by a roaring log fire overlooked by giant Irish elk antlers.

Disappointingly no sign of any of the many ghosts said to wander the castle, and no sightings of the Chillingham White Cattle either.  Next time …

I shall miss my visits to Bamburgh – the fantastic walks along the vast beach, the view from my bedroom window of the North Sea and the Farne Isles, my visits to the wonderful Grace Darling Museum in the village, my chats with OH …
