To Oxford last weekend. Walked along the flooding Thames/Isis to St Frideswide’s Well at Binsey, by the side of St. Margaret’s church. Once a medieval pilgrimage spot, its waters are said to have healing powers – the word ‘treacle’ was an old apothecaries’ term for a type of medicine. A treacle well is mentioned by the dormouse in Lewis Carroll’s book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and oddly enough its waters still look rather treacley. Didn’t see Elsie, Lacie or Tillie though.
