(Barnes & Noble 2007) Pictures by Sally Kindberg for Foul Facts by Tracey Turner (English Heritage August 2007) There was a fantastic atmosphere at the Big Draw event at the Guardian Newsroom on 27th September 2008 ... the last Big Draw event to be held at that venue before the Guardian and Observer move to their new Kings Place HQ. Top illustrators, cartoonists, painters and sculptors ran workshops throughout the day for a seething crowd of families ... it was the busiest I've ever seen it ... and everyone seemed happy! Children of all ages (and their parents, with a little encouragement) took part in Sally Kindberg's workshop which involved drawing a comic strip story "What Happened Next".  There were some fabulous results (see pics) ... witty, inventive and surprising. Her fascination is obvious from the casually tousled mass of zany information which packs this book, along with her own characterful black ink drawings. For this age-group, the text is unusually long, but it needs to be, because this writer seriously knows her hair. From historical snippets such as the habit of 14th-century ladies to sit in moonlight to make their hair blonde, to the unappealing add-on that 14m US children have nits, a reader's knowledge of hair is guaranteed to grow to Rapunzel-esque lengths. Quick Flick Oh, how we love to leaf through a funny hair book, and this offering had us totally hooked. HAIR, by Sally Kindberg, (£2.99, Walker Books) might not be the most adult of reads, but it's full of hair facts and funny quotes. And hey, who wants to be grown-up, anyway?
